…where Time is merciless and Light feeds darkness.

A Light that Never Goes Out | poem

On some days, the sky gets heavy,
And it tries oh so hard to bury me;
On other days when I begin to feel free
It is the ground that tries and swallow me.

In the blink of an eye, the air in my lungs can turn to rocks
And at that moment, as every alarm in my mind goes off,
Every atom in me starts vibrating anxiously and leaves me
Frozen in Time and broken.

The Darkness of the world bleeds onto me
But I stubbornly keep my eyes on the Light.

And it is hard to see, but I keep going,
Bracing myself for each storm
That I know will carefully break my wings
As I fly blindly through its merciless winds
But I always build them back on time for the fall —
When gravity finally strikes me.

Sometimes it feels like the whole world is out to get me,
Me and my fragile little heart ; so lonely.
But every now and then, there is a wise bird that stops by,
And sings the songs of Hope and Light on my balcony.

I can always recognize those melodies
For they constantly vibrate within me,
But also all around me, bouncing off the trees,
And echoing from a stranger’s smile to another
Or from a helping hand to another —
Never really touching us, but always leaving a trace.

The Darkness of the world bleeds onto me
But I stubbornly keep my eyes on the Light.

It would be so easy to forget it exists
When the darker clouds are so thick
And the poison tongues cut so deep
But Light is Darkness’ stubborn sister
And it never leaves Her side.

Times can be hard or scary;
Your insides can turn dark or bitter;
But for the willing eye, there’s always a spark to see,
And a spark is all it takes to start a fire;
A spark is all it takes to scare away the monsters
And help you realize they were but a chair and a sweater.

I have been finding it hard lately to put my thoughts and feelings into words and shapes, but I think I did a pretty good job here. I would have loved to polish this more, but I had promised to myself that I would share it tonight, so I had to!

My vision of darkness has always been that it is necessary and doesn’t have to be scary. It is indeed very important because without darkness, you wouldn’t know about the stars and you sure as hell wouldn’t be able to tell which is the brightest star.

Darkness helps bring out the light, even though I know that usually when it hits you, all you can see is the darkness. But what you need to do is to slow down, take deep breaths and give your eyes some time to adjust; only then will you be able to see the things that are still around you and also notice things that you hadn’t seen before.

I have seen many days of personal darkness and I believe that even at 23 I have lived through a fair amount of “collective” darkness. And my mind always tends to lean into that darkness anyways, even when it’s not there, because it’s just what I do, but it isn’t such a bad thing. Over the years, it has taught me how to keep looking for the Light.

So, I hope that if you’re reading this, it serves as a reminder that there is always Light to be found around you: in people, in things, in sounds or feelings, in the world ; everywhere. If you can’t seem to find it, you need to try and maybe squint your eyes a little or move your head to a different angle to find it. Because there is always at least a tiny spark, and that spark will always be enough.

And when all else fails, if you keep looking and digging and digging, but you still cannot seem to find a spark, then maybe take a look inside yourself. You might find that the only light in your vicinity is you, and that light too will always be enough to keep you going through the darkness and to break through it.

That’s all I have for this post. I hope you are keeping well and checking in on your loved ones, making sure they’re okay and keeping their eyes on the Light too.

Stay safe, and thank you so much for reading ♥

  3. I picked two things from your poem;
    1. Keep your eyes on the light.
    2. The monster is only a chair and a sweater.
    Everyday has its own evil but if we would only fixate our eyes on the good (light), we get to keep our joy and peace.
    We are certainly bigger than a chair and a sweater 😂(the things that pose as a threat to us), so we should live life courageously!
    Great post.
